Vermont establishes a constitutional right to an abortion

WASHINGTON — Vermont will make abortion a constitutional right after voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure in Tuesday’s election.

Proposition 5, which would “ensure that every Vermonter is afforded personal reproductive liberty, is one of five abortion-related measures on the ballot in a midterm election where reproductive health care has taken center stage. California and Michigan are also voting to codify abortion as a constitutional right, while Kentucky is voting to explicitly deny it as a right. In Montana, voters weighed in on a measure requiring care for fetus born alive after an abortion attempt, which is largely expected to pass. The results in those states are not finalized yet.
